Cambridge Audio Dacmagic

I'm considering getting one of these to hook up between laptop and hi-fi. Apparently it only supports USB up to 48KHz. I don't actually know what this means in relation to sound quality, can someone maybe explain to me in idiot terms! Also, would it improve on the DAC in my Cyrus CD8SE, I would hope not but stranger things etc. Very Happy
